4th Grade: Pines & Pioneers
Travel back to Florida’s pioneer days to explore daily life in 1880 and compare it to present day lifestyles. The program includes discussion on pioneer food, clothing, tools, work and play, and emphasizes the importance of pine trees as a resource for early people. Students will learn about Florida’s pinelands through an interpretive hike, try their hand at pioneer chores, and use observation skills and a dichotomous key to identify common pine tree species.

Through models, a guided watershed walk, and interactive activities, students will explore the many ways the river influences our daily lives, and how our actions can have unintended consequences to our local waterways!
