Wednesday, November 9, 2011 - St. Lucie County Erosion District to Perform Emergency Work at South Jetty
South Hutchinson Island - Starting Thursday, Nov. 10 at 7 a.m., a small, 200-cubic-yard truck haul of beach sand will be piled on the dune at the end of Seaway Drive at Jetty Park. The project will provide an emergency protective measure to prevent over wash of waves onto Seaway Drive. This work may be repeated several times before the large Army Corps of Engineers' 415,000-cubic-yard re-nourishment project begins in January 2012.
The recent tropical storm eroded the beaches significantly and caused some escarpment of the dunes that later high tides have smoothed, but the roadway is now threatened at Seaway Drive by the gradual loss of dune. The project is scheduled to be completed in one day.
