Battery Disposal / Recycling
The next time those rechargeable batteries die in your child's toy or your cell phone stops working; don't toss the rechargeable batteries in the trash. Instead take them to a local battery recycling collection center. Avoid having hazardous materials take up space in the county landfill, by dropping them off at one of the many local retailers that have volunteered to serve as a collection center for a national rechargeable battery program.

St. Lucie County's Baling Facility fills a 30-gallon drum (equal to a standard-size trash can) of rechargeable batteries to recycle every three months. This roughly equals 600 pounds of rechargeable batteries. That's a lot of batteries considering the average cell phone battery weighs one ounce.
